some quick lore: “loosely gooselike” is my favorite autocorrect *mistake* when I most definitely wanted to say “loosey goosey” to friends when making plans. And we all know what happens when we make plans…

the memo
Is it true that some things can only happen when there’s an audience? This feels true. The heat is picking up — so much culminating and mounting energy is present this coming week. And I see the mood calls for a performance (of a lifetime?).
But it’s not a cute performance. Like, how some poetry readings or stand up sets are to see how a piece “lands” so you can go back to your cave to rework it with the feedback. Rather, this week’s performance is like a firework.
Once set off, it is incinerated.
Imagine a firework set off for no one to see. Wouldn’t that be a waste?
Look, cognitive dissonance is high right now. In the same minute, we can desire a brand new wardrobe aesthetic and also witness families ripped apart by living ghouls with coal-dark hearts. And so now when I encourage you to step into this week with the goal of clowning, please know I mean it with the understanding that clown-work is necessary in these times. Just as actively grieving is. Just as important as knowing your neighbors’ names.
The following week is going to change everything as we know it. Dramatic wording intended.
This week though—go out there, put on your costume, and set fire to your expression. Don’t let it go to waste. Gather people around to watch you shoot yourself into the sky. Don’t pause for applause. It’s likely laughter will follow. And that’s exactly what we want to see from you, us, this week, now. It’s the people who watch you perform that make the performance something to behold.
TL;DR: shoot yourself to the moon, make ‘em laugh, don’t wait to perfect it, it’s time, time’s up, go out and get ‘em, nothing really happens if there’s no one there to witness it.

and I recorded an episode and intentionally / unintentionally dressed like clowns. We eventually had to trash the recording for tech reasons (booooo!) and so we’re going to go full boar when we re-record. The dance video above captioned “clowning 101” has solidified for me that I have entered my Clowning Season.Trapeze is the perfect movie. It’s on Tubi now!

field journal
hello self—I suppose I am at that age where having a dream of an injury can cause my back to go out. And so this week I was still recovering from incredible pain and the inability to bend down or move around to do the simplest things like wash dishes, sit at my desk, la la, etc etc, you get it. I’ve been thinking about the pendulum swing — the power of opposites — how when I could barely move my body without crying out in pain, I imagined incredibly physical feats like trapezists or marathon runners (who talk about feeling gratitude for all the people in their lives once they hit mile 16 or 20 or…). But when I am not myself in pain and my body can move with considerable ease, I barely desire the life of an athlete or dancer. I wonder what it would be like to do this life over again, but in the same life I’m living, where the wishes in my heart and much less verbal and mental and moreso aimed at the manipulation of my bones, toes, knees, flesh, belly, chest, clavicle, nostril, breathing. I would do this, yes, if I was making someone else laugh.
